The STC Academic SIG invites individual and team submissions to a student poster competition at STC Summit ’13. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. Selected posters will be presented through Skype at the Summit, making it possible for students to participate in the competition in person while attending the conference or from a distance.

Technical & Professional Communication: Student Research. Submit innovative work in communicating technical content, managing a technical communication group, producing and publishing content, researching content, or promoting the profession.

Who Can Enter: Undergraduate and graduate students or teams of students. Students do not need to be a member of STC to enter or (if they are selected) to present virtually at the Summit.

Submission Guidelines: The time restriction on the creation of the poster is on or after 1 January 2012. Posters are to be submitted through email, and selected posters presented, as PDFs. Poster format templates and design help are available from a number of Internet locations, including C.B. Purrington’s Designing Conference Posters, http://colinpurrington.com/tips/academic/posterdesign; and K. Powell’s “Presentations: Billboard Science,” http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/articles/10.1038%2Fnj7387-113a

How to Submit: In an email, attach the following:

• A 250-word abstract: Provide a title for and summary of the project for the poster. In the summary, include the nature or significance of the topic, research question(s), participants, methods, results, and conclusion. Include specifications for the poster and any restrictions that had to be met. Single-space, use 11 pt. Calibri font, and submit as a PDF. Name the file TitleofPoster_Abstract_STC13

Subject line: STC student poster competition 2013

Winner Selection: A panel of judges, composed of academic and practitioner members of STC, will evaluate the content and design of all submissions. Those selected to compete at the Summit also will be judged on delivery. The top two posters will be awarded cash prizes of $125 and $75 and, we hope, additional incentives from vendors. The assessment form is available on the STC Academic SIG Web site: http://www.stc-academic.org/for-students/student-poster-competition/

Presentation: The competition committee will provide instructions on presenting through Skype to those whose posters are selected for presentation at Summit ‘13. Students who present virtually will not be charged a Summit fee. Students who want to attend the Summit in person will need to pay the registration fee, which is $175 for student members. Student members of STC can volunteer to work for at least one day at the Summit to cover the registration fee. If a student is not a member of STC, s/he can join at the student rate of $75.
